“Everyone who knows me, knows I keep it real, and if I say I’m going to do something, then I’m going to do it.”
Amber Jones
If you looked up the term “triple threat” in the dictionary, you’d see a picture of Ms. Amber Jones. Not only is she a beautiful singer, comedian, TV and radio personality, but she is also an up-and-coming actress with 13 shows including Tyler Perry’s Sistas, CW’s Black Lightening, and more on the way. As a single mother, raising her daughter was priority number one.
Later, as an empty nester, she took a leap of faith and moved to Black Hollywood, aka Atlanta, GA, to unapologetically pursue her dreams on her own terms.
Recently, iBronze had the opportunity to find what inspires her fearlessness in this new chapter of her life.
The Interview
Amber: The turning point for me is when my daughter, Nyla, graduated high school and decided to go to college. I always wanted to be in a movie or TV show, but I knew in Virginia, it’s not really a big deal, so I put it off to raise her. But once I became an empty-nester, I was like, why not try it now?
iBronze- What motivates you?
Amber- My motivation is my family and true friends. If they hear or see a casting or something going on in my field, they’ll call or text me with the information to go for it! Also, people that didn’t believe in me or support me motivates me to go even harder.
COVID TIMES
iBronze- Can you describe/outline your typical day (pre-covid/post-covid)?
Amber- A typical day in the acting world before the pandemic would consist of waking up extra early (sometimes 5 am to be on set) for hair/makeup, then heading over to the set for filming, which could sometimes last up to 12 hours. Now, due to Covid protocols, we have to take the Covid test every day (before and during filming), no hair/makeup (have to do it yourself), [and] have to wear masks for the majority of filming as they try to have everyone 6ft apart. It’s very different.
iBronze- What has been your most satisfying moment in the business?
Amber- My most satisfying moment so far is my very first acting gig in Atlanta which was on the set of Tyler Perry’s Sistas. Mr. Perry handpicked me for a very featured grocery store scene and airport scene. Then when the commercial came out on BET, I was in it! This was only my second time ever acting in my life! I am super honored and grateful for him kicking off my career!
iBronze- How do you define success?
Amber- To me, success is defined by how YOU feel about accomplishments you’ve made in your life that make you feel comfortable. It’s not always about money because there’s a lot of “successful”, unhappy people out there.
ACTING CAREER
iBronze- How has your new career affected your personal/family life?
Amber- Great question. Everyone that knows me knows I keep it real, and if I say I’m going to do something, then I’m going to do it. My family definitely has input on my decisions but supports my crazy tail 100% even if what I do makes no sense. My personal life, as far as that goes, really showed a LOT of people’s true colors before I even moved to Atlanta. I lost a few close people along the way as I began this journey, and even now, some people can’t handle my unorthodox lifestyle, but when you make a decision to follow your dreams, and they become a reality, I let those people stay sleep. Respectfully.
iBronze- What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage it?
Amber- I guess my greatest fear would be even to have one. As long as you have God in your life, you shouldn’t fear anything in this world.
iBronze- Do you have any advice for someone thinking of reinventing themselves at midlife?
Amber- Yes! Don’t be afraid! Just do it!
AMBER’S MANTRA FOR LIFE
iBronze- Do you live by any favorite quotes or mantras?
Amber- Everything happens for a reason, 100% of SOMETHING is better than 100% of NOTHING, and Laughter is the best medicine.
