“The window of opportunity is guaranteed, you just have to go through it.” – Eric Roberson
A couple of years ago, I mustered up the courage to perform an impromptu audition for a dream job. I’m talking, a “never again will I likely get the opportunity to do this,” dream job. I had the floor, his ear, and did well enough to be granted a second audition. This time, a little more polished and a little more prepared. My heart sank. Although I was excited and highly motivated, I wasn’t prepared at all. I didn’t have the tools, the knowledge, or the know-how to make a demo or create the songs I wanted to sing. The songs that truly represented me.
I no longer want that job, but I believe that preparedness is the secret sauce to a chance encounter becoming the opportunity of a lifetime. This year is all about setting myself up for that next encounter, whatever that may be. Moving to a new and creative environment, connecting with knowledgeable people in my field of interest, music lessons, getting healthy, and creating a more systematic way of managing my tasks and stress. I will have a social life somewhere in between, but 2021 is about staying hyper-focused to achieve my 2022 goals.
